The story of Girija Kalyana is about the divine 'Kalyana' (marriage) of 'Girija' i.e. Goddess Parvati with God Shiva. According to the myth, the celebration of the wedding is attended by a host of deities and attendant figures. In Hampi folklore, Girija Kalyana is the story of the marriage of Pampa Devi (Parvati) to Virupaksha (Shiva), who is also known as Pampapathi. The divine marriage Girija Kalyana has great significance for the Hindus, as it is believed that taking part in the temple rituals connected with this story, brings great religious merit and virtues to the devotes.
